Artist Statement

Intrigued with shapes and forms, s.m.dyer investigates through the ephemeral nature of nature, the spirit that is buried within. Using available light, she explores her subject through a variety of methods, motion and actions, honing in on its essence, but also exposing a critical comment on the relationship humanity shares with our environment.

2018 has been a strong year so far with a showing of The Duck Series at Galleria Scalia (Brooklyn Heights NY), acceptance into a show juried by Randall R. Griffey, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC (Greenwich Art Society), and Art to the Avenue (Greenwich Arts Council), as featured artist for The First Bank of Greenwich. 2017 saw s.m.dyer in two very successful shows, Photographic Abstraction in SoHo NYC at Galleria Scalia, and a group show ‘My Manhattan’, at ilon Art Gallery, NYC. She has had images on the set of the film 'Train Wreck' (Universal Studios), the NBC television show 'American Odyssey', the set of HBO’s 'Succession', the soon to be released 'Isn’t it Romantic' (Warner Brothers), and a Scott Rudin / FX Production, ‘Compliance’ (to be announced). Her work hangs in Haddad celebrity campers, where a well-known actress procured a few of her pieces. She’s been written up in L'Oeil de la Photographie magazine. Other pieces can be found internationally in private collections, restaurants, and offices. She’s also been in several group shows, and premiered The Shrouded Series at Galleria Scalia, Brooklyn Heights 2015-2016.

Through my work as a photo archivist and gallery owner, I have met many amazing, wonderful photographers, most in NYC, at all stages of their careers. I asked these artists to share their artistic impressions of this pulsating city.Familiar buildings, familiar neighborhoods, and iconic portraits are on view. There are also scenes of everyday street life from the rich and glamorous to the not-so glamorous. My Manhattan is New York City crystal clear and abstract and blurry, in both color and black and white. This is Manhattan in all its glory. If you love Manhattan, this show brings out nostalgia. Images range from the early 1950’s to today, vintage to modern prints.
